GTS / Services / in process order

One visit,
start to finish

When a vehicle changes hands it must be tested, registered and plated. The three steps below are the order we do them in, all at one address.

01

Roadworthy test

A roadworthy certificate confirms a vehicle is safe and legal for South African roads. It's required when a vehicle changes ownership, is re-registered, or has to clear a defect notice.

Our examiners inspect the key safety systems and issue the certificate once the vehicle passes. If something needs attention, we tell you exactly what it is so it can be corrected. The retest is free within 14 calendar days, which is the window the National Road Traffic Act allows.

We test trailers and caravans with a GVM of 750 kg or less; heavier units fall outside our scope.

A test takes 30 to 40 minutes. National Minimum Test Times set a floor of 26 minutes on the vehicle itself, so a roadworthy cannot legitimately be rushed through in ten. Data capturing accounts for the balance, and the queue accounts for the rest.

We do not take appointments. Walk in any weekday between 08:00 and 17:30, but arrive by 17:00 at the latest, because that is when we take the last test of the day.

Registration & licensing

We attend licensing departments across Gauteng and beyond on your behalf: registrations, changes of ownership and annual licence renewals. You leave your documents with us; we stand in the queue.

It's the simplest way to put a newly purchased car, motorcycle, caravan or trailer into your name without taking a day off to do it yourself.

Number plates

Gateway Test Station is approved and registered with the SABS and the Gauteng Provincial Government as an embosser and fitment centre for number plates.

Plates are embossed on-site to SABS standard while you wait. The process takes about ten minutes. We emboss on non-painted aluminium blanks: weather-resistant, and they won't fade, delaminate or bubble.
